Aggreko Market Intelligence

At Brainnwave, as one of our very first projects, we worked closely with power solutions company Aggreko to help them combine multiple data sources in order to better understand their potential sales opportunities, their business landscape and a number of other goals.

When I joined Brainnwave, the Aggreko platform was in its infancy and really just a side project alongside our main data marketplace. It took a number of months before we pivoted to focus on this platform as our main business concern.

What began as a very simple platform, grew over time to accommodate more features as those requirements were discovered.

Beginnings

Below is one of the very first iterations of the platform. It was just “the Brainnwave platform” at that stage:

Iterations

Over time, the platform got a new name and identity (Ossian) and you can see the navigation heirarchy changed. The main navigation was moved up, and the country selection was treated as a simple filter, with the option to add further filters along a bar at the top, thus freeing up horizontal space on the map and list.

The ranking parameters editing section was slightly reworked to make more sense, and a number of other tweaks were made (including a useful expand toggle for those with larger screens).

AMI

The platform was eventually branded as AMI [Amy] - Aggreko Market Intelligence, and would take on their branding colours, a new icon/logo which I designed and was rolled out internally for their teams.

Gas Flaring Solution

One of the emerging uses for the platform became one of it’s most impressive features.

By analysing and implementing night time satellite data of gas flaring worldwide, users of the platform were able to determine what facilities around the world were flaring excessively.

Considering the environmental implications, Aggreko had developed a solution with which to capture and convert excess gas being flared, and so the ability to determine where gas was being flared, and accurately pinpoint that to a facility was very useful for sales representatives.

Combine that with the ability to dig into projects assigned to that facility, and then developers assigned to those projects, meant Aggreko could very quickly find the right organisation and contact to approach with their environmentally friendly solution.

Other areas

Not content with just geospatial data on facilities, power locations and all of the collateral that came with that, we also built a news aggregation service into the platform to search for relevant articles based on keywords supplied by Aggreko, as well as macro economic data and country risk analysis to give users the bigger picture on a country or region, should they wish to consider expansion of operations.

Cost/benefit analysis

To understand the benefits versus cost of the platform we worked with Aggreko to perform a cost benefit analysis, and the results were astonishing:

Ultimately the AMI platform may have been one of Brainnwave’s most successful products. The adoption of which internally by Aggreko was paramount to its success.
